About Us

Racing Analytical Services Ltd (RASL) is an independent not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee, established in 1988 to provide drug testing services to the Victorian racing industry. The company has grown to be one of the leading racing laboratories in the world, testing racehorses and greyhounds for the Victorian, South Australian and Tasmanian racing industries as well as for international clients such as Macau thoroughbred and greyhound racing.

As the only independent racing laboratory in Australia, RASL is able to use the expertise developed from 25 years of race testing to provide testing services to other industries. Testing for illicit drugs is increasingly used to guarantee the integrity and safety of Australian workplaces. RASL also performs rapid compound identification for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, giving the company a valuable insight into which drugs are entering the country. By expanding the company’s operations into other drug and chemical testing fields, RASL continues to grow in size and capabilities, maintaining instrumentation and research and development capabilities that are beyond the reach of smaller drug testing companies.

RASL maintains a high security laboratory in a self-contained wing of the Racing Victoria Centre in Flemington.

Despite the diversification of its operations, providing drug testing services to the local racing industry is still the primary focus of RASL. Corporate governance is provided by a seven person board, four of whom are appointed by the Victorian racing minister, while the other three are representatives of the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing industries. This corporate structure guarantees that the company continues to meet the specific needs of the local racing industry while still operating independently of both the Government and racing industry. Operational management is provided by the Laboratory Director, Mr David Batty.

RASL employs 30 qualified staff members with relevant experience in all aspects of biological fluid extraction techniques and chromatographic analysis for an extensive range of drugs. Of the 23 full-time staff directly involved in drug testing operations, 16 are science graduates (4 with post-graduate degrees) and 7 have technical qualifications. The company is proud of the extensive training provided to staff members to ensure that the highest standards of analysis and operational efficiency are maintained. The company currently employs 8 staff members in its research and development laboratory.

Not for profit status:

The constitution of RASL provides that all profits are retained by the company and no dividends are paid to members and shareholders. Surplus income is used to support research and development as well as for the purchase of new analytical equipment. Because RASL is a not for profit company, it strives to deliver quality drug testing services at an economical price.
